Health & Safety Instructor Training courses prepare you to teach others how to save lives though Adult, Child & Infant CPR and First Aid education. You must have current Red Cross certification in Adult, Child & Infant CPR as well as First Aid to register for this course.

Successful Instructor Traits

To become a basic instructor for the American Red Cross Disaster Response Training Program, you must complete the following steps:

bulletTake Fulfilling Our Mission - Translating Your Compassion into Community Action
bulletTake Fundamentals of Instruction and Facilitation
bulletTake any three Basic Disaster Training Courses.
bulletA combination of local and national Disaster Relief experiences (talk with your local chapter for more information on this requirement)
bulletSuccessfully complete Disaster Instructor Specialty Training

Once you have completed the above requirements, you are eligible to request approval from your jurisdictional unit to teach basic level courses which you have taken and have operational experience.

Health & Safety Preparedness Program instructors or instructor trainers may request an opportunity to course-train to become a Basic disaster instructor. Health and Safety Preparedness Program instructors wishing to cross-train must-

bulletBe an active Health & Safety Preparedness Program instructor.
bulletHave completed the Disaster Response course of instruction which he or she wishes to teach. If it has been more than a year since the specific course was taken, the person wishing to cross-train must attend the course again to observe the techniques used by the instructors and the flow of the course.
bulletMeet the requirements for teaching the Disaster Response course, as specified in the fact sheet for the course.
bulletComplete and submit an Application for Basic Disaster Instructor-Disaster Training System (Form 5898G).

Note: A Health and Safety Preparedness Program candidate for cross-training does not have to complete Fundamentals of Instruction and Facilitation (FIF). The candidate need not have completed Disaster Instructor Specialty Training (DIST) unless unit leadership wishes to make completion of DIST a requirement. The candidate may not have to complete an Instructor Agreement for American Red Cross Courses if one is already on file in the unit.

Earn continuing education hours and CEUs through the American Red Cross.
